On the 3nd day after Turkey Day you should Give an AirPort Express |
 |
November 28, 2004
Coming in at third is the AirPort Express.
If you know someone who wants to extend their wireless network and/or would like to play their music in a different room, consider giving him or her this cool gift. The AirPort Express rolls in at $115–$130, so it should not break your bank.

It is that Time of year again !!! |
 |
November 26, 2004
For 12 days after Thanksgiving, I will be doing a countdown of killer gifts to get for the Mac person in your life.
On the first day after Turkey Day, you should give your true love…
An iPod!!!!
If you know anyone that loves or just likes music, they ought to have an iPod. It's a fairly obvious answer, but you need to consider the lifestyle of the recipient to know which one to buy.
iPod mini: The iPod mini would be for someone who prefers a small and lighter MP3 player. It's great for that stylish person who has to have everything color coordinated; the iPod mini is available in five trendy colors. Right now, it is the most affordable—at $250 MSRP, it holds 1,000 songs.
iPod 20/40 Gig: The iPod 20Gig and iPod 40Gig can hold 5,000 to 10,000 songs and is just a little bigger than the iPod mini. Priced at $299 and $399.
iPod U2/ 20Gig: This iPod will probably be coveted by two types of people. The first are those who love U2 and the second are those who think the black and red color scheme is chic. Available at $350 and 5,000 songs.

CONTROL: Replaytv and Mac home video Server!!!! (Part 3) |
 |
November 23, 2004
This is Part 2: Setting up your mac to talk to your ReplayTV.
Now that you have all the Hardware from (part 1) and a connection set up from (part 2) you are ready to set up the software.
This Post is a half how to and half a software review.
What you will need for this part:
With Both your mac and your ReplayTV on the same network it is time to get the software working. Start by going to www.DVArchive.org and download DV Archive and install it.
(Please keep in mind that some of the following came from their Read Me document and some are my own suggestions and thoughts.)
Getting Started
To use DVArchive, you will need Java 1.4.2 or later, which itself requires Mac OS X 10.3.1 or later. If you have Mac OS 10.2.3 through 10.2.8 and Java 1.4.1 installed, you will be able to use DVArchive, but it is unsupported and may not perform as expected. To get the latest Java for your system, use Software Update (in System Preferences) and whatever is current will be available for download.
---- In order to make this program useful, the biggest thing you will need to set up is the following:
Video Playback on your Mac
A popular feature of DVArchive is the ability to play back its files locally or streamed from your ReplayTV or another DVArchive. To do this in Mac OS X, they recommend QuickTime 6.1 or later with Apple's MPEG-2 Playback Component ($20, purchase and download from here; or included with Final Cut Pro and DVD Studio Pro).
After all that is set up:
Once that is finished, the app will open a window. In this window, on the right, you will see all the ReplayTVs on the network and your computer's media (if you have not downloaded video to your computer, this will be empty). If you look under ReplayTVs, you will see all the shows it has recorded. In this window, you will also see tabs/buttons at top. Most buttons are self-explanatory.
If you just want to watch your shows on your Mac from the ReplayTV, just Control click on a show on the left and select Play. If you would like to download a show, Control click on a show on the left and select Download.
How I use this software
I have DVArchive set up on my home server so that it is always running in the background. I have set up the app to download nightly all new videos that have been recorded during the day. Doing this helps me keep all the videos I want and/or burn them to a DVD to share with friends or watch on long plane rides.
From time to time I do use the remote control feature. this will let you control your ReplayTV from your computer. I use my laptop or may Mac Tablet it is like having big remote control that is using 801.11b (WiFI) instead of IR.
My Thoughts:
If it was not for DVArchive, ReplayTV would not be worth getting. The program is well made and, for what is does, is very stable and simple to use.
Come soon: Come soon: Part 4, How to make a DVD from ReplayTV videos.

I love cool hack check this one out.
This tutorial will show you how to install an iPod into an RX-8 using the "CD Player Hack". This involves removing the radio, and soldering an audio cable into it. Then you put it all back together, and pop in a CD containing 80 minutes of pure silence. The radio will only pick up your new AUX-Input when a CD is playing.

PRODUCTS: 30- inch's is something to look at |
 |
November 19, 2004
My local Apple store has the new Apple 30-inch cinema HD, so I had to stop by and look.
The only way I can describe this display is GIGANTIC! It is bigger than my home TV. Now, as I have said before, I think the only way to use a Mac is with two monitors, but this monitor is equivalent to two 21-inch monitors, side by side. If that does not put it into perspective, look at this photo I took.
I opened up six web pages, and they all fit with some room to spare. Like I told you, it is big. I did not have a DVD to watch on it, but I can only imagine how cool it would be.
The only thing I did not like about it is its price tag. $3,299.00—ouch!!! For the same price, you could get one Apple Cinema 23" HD Flat-Panel Display and one Apple Cinema 20" Flat-Panel Display for the same price. That is 225,680 more pixels—about the size of a 14" monitor. With that said, if you are looking to get me something for Xmas, this would work just fine.

PRODUCTS: iPod photo IN Living Color: |
 |
November 18, 2004
I had a chance to hit the Apple Store and look at the new iPod photo from Apple . If you have not been keeping up with your Mac news, Apple has come out with an iPod photo. It will store photos and play them back on its color display or out to a TV.
Look and feel
The case of the new iPod photo has the same shape as the 40 gig iPod. The difference is that it has a color screen. Seeing the UI in color is kind of cool at first, but it does not improve function a whole lot.
Photo
From the main UI, you can get to the photo section. This gives you all the photos albums. As you have probably guessed by now, you use the wheel to scroll through them and use the center button to go to the highlighted album. Once in an album, you are given a screen full of thumbnails. By clicking on one, it opens full screen.
Games
mmmmm.... Break Out in color… oooooo... Solitaire, now I can see the color of the suits.
As you can see, I do not think color improves the games a whole lot. I think they should have add a game that only plays in color, but most people do not get an iPod for games anyway. They get a Game Boy for that.
My thought
The iPod 40 gig is $399 and the iPod photo 40 gig is $499. For $100 more, is it worth it just to have your photos with you? Most likely, you took them with a digital camera and your camera has a screen on it to see them. Also, do you really need a 40 gig iPod? If you ask me, I would get an iPod 20 gig for $299 and a Canon PowerShot SD110 3MP Digital Elph for $219. That way, you can take photos as well as have an iPod.
What I think is missing
If they added the ability to play QuickTime movies, then I could see spending $499 for it. I would love to be able to take movies from my ReplayTV server (see: ReplayTV and Mac home video server!!!! Part 1, Part 2 or Part 3 (coming soon)) and play them on my iPod through a TV at my friend's house. Now that is what Apple should be working on.

Soft: Fighting spam one email at a time... |
 |
November 17, 2004
Rail head design has a little AppleScript that will help you fight spam if you use Microsoft’s Entourage.
This is from their site and it does work.
SpamReporter is a Mac AppleScript designed to work with Microsoft Entourage from Office v10 or Office 2000. When you receive a Spam message (or messages as the case may be), simply select the message(s) and then choose “SpamReporter Script” from Entourage’s script men. The script will then do the following magic:
• Create a new report message.
• Set the subject of the report message to the Spam message’s subject prefixed with ?FWD SPAM:?.
• Extract the FULL header information from the Spam message and put it in the body of the report message.
• Copy the Spam message’s body and insert it below the headers in the report message.
• Address the report message to the addresses you provide uce@ftc.gov is included by default).
• Send the report message to the recipients using the POP account you specify (or your default address, by default).
• Delete the original Spam message from your Inbox.
Best of all, SpamReporter does all this in a fraction of a second — and the only thing you have to do is select it from Entourage’s script menu.
I beg you, please download this and help the world fight spam. Now I am off to email every one I know about this :)

MOM's Tip: Dup that CD/DVD without Toast |
 |
November 17, 2004
Have you ever wanted to make a dup of a CD for backup or are you sick of putting in a CD or DVD every time you wanted to play a game? Let us help with the disk pain.
Note: Mac Over Matter is not condoning making copies for friends and we do not condone stealing software. Please support the people making software. It is how bills are paid. Now, time to come of my high horse and tell you how to do it.
Apple has a cool little app called Disk Utility. This app is used mostly for all disk repair, but it can make a disk image or a .dmg. A .dmg is like a small stuffed hard drive. Think of it is as a virtual hard drive or CD that you can mount by clicking on it, or you can look at it as a back up file.
How to do it:
Insert a CD that you want to make a .dmg of into your Mac.
Open the app which you can find it in your hard drive/Applications/Utilities/ Disk Utility. Go to the top menu and click on Image/New/(Your CD Name).
This will pop up the Convert Image window. All you have to do is type in that you want to call it and pick where you want to save it. This could take a little time if it is a full CD or DVD.
When it is finished, you will have a .dmg file.
Now when you open an app that asks you to insert the original CD, just open the .dmg. Some games and apps will not work with .dmg, but I have only found two that didn't so far.
Make a CD copy:
To make a copy, open up Disk Utility. Go to the top menu and click on Image/Burn. In the new pop-up window, find your .dmg and click Open. In the next window, click Burn. The time it takes to burn is determined by the size of the .dmg and the speed of your Mac. That's it!
As you can see, it is relatively simple to do and it will save you some hassle, but please, do not use this for pirating software.

PRODUCTS: DVI to s-video ??? |
 |
November 16, 2004
As I was at the Apple Store looking around, something caught my eye. It was a DVI to s-video adapter for a G5. I had no idea Apple made this. If you are looking for a way to push your video out to a TV, this would work. I am thinking of using it to get my home server's video pushed to the TV sets in my house. Why would you want to do that, you ask? Because I can!!!

CONTROL: Dead iSight—iFight, iMight win??? |
 |
November 14, 2004
What do I say to a friend that hands me a dead iSight and asks me to fix it, even though I have never opened one before? "OK!!! I will gladly crack it open and 'fix it'!"
My friend's iSight would turn on, give him 2 sec. of video, and then shut off. So he asked me if I could look at it .
As I was playing with the on/off switch, it sounded like it had a piece of sand in it. Sounds like it is time to take that thing apart. I love taking Apple stuff apart. It's like a Rubik's Cube.
Time to Dive In
Is it time to admit that I have no idea what I am doing?
I started by taking out the 2 small under screws.
Next I had to pull out the little white plastic piece on the bottom. I discovered that in order to do this, I first had to pull the front lens a little. to make a big enough gap to fit a screw driver in and pop the plastic piece out.
With that out, I was able to pull on the front lens and slip the camera out of its metal shell.
Once it was out, I still had to take off the lens to get the sand pebble out. Looking around the lens, I found three more screws that needed to be removed.
Once the screws were removed, I could not find any sand. Ummmmm... well it sounded like it was there. Now that I have it apart, let's see if it works. After plugging it into my Powerbook, it looked like it worked fine. Time to put it back together, but not before I take photos to show you all the insides (see below). Now with it all back together, it works and it sounds like the sand is gone, but I still can't find it.

SOFT: A retro-style game gets over 100,000+ downloads |
 |
November 12, 2004
Hillbilly Whack, with it blocky graphic and simple idea that all you need is a wood board to do damage, has announced that it has hit over 100,000+ downloads. Why is this worth a post? Well, this game just makes me laugh. A hillbilly running around trying to save his girl Winnie May, rebuild his outhouse, watch out for livestock, and defeat a big boss at the end—well, that has to make you smile. OH, and don't forget chicks. Lots of drunk chicks.
It is a worth checking out for a good laugh.

Ok, the Mac will probably watch YOU cook instead, but at least it will help you from burning any more toast thanks to Macgourmet.com's new app.
How I love the idea of having my laptop sitting next to me as I cook. Two of the best things: food and a Mac—what a combo. (Is it time for an Apple pie joke yet?)
When you open the app, it has the feel of a normal Mac app with everything where you think it should be. The layout reminds me of a cross between iTunes and some kind of database software. I would almost say this app is "iTunes For Your Food."
This app has a place for all your food needs: wine, notes, shopping list, and recipes. Adding an entry to any of the Lists is as simple as you would hope. The best thing about MacGourmet I could find is the Featured List. This list pulls new recipes from the MacGourmet website. I have not had a chance to try them all, but they look good and it was nice not having to hunt for them all over the web.
As you probably have guessed, this app is good for any cook, novice or gourmet.

M.O.M's TIP: Print a jewel case from iTunes |
 |
November 11, 2004
One of the little unknown things about iTunes is that it can print song lists and cover art. Let MOM show you how to do it.
If you make cd for people or just your self, you know how hard it is to make a jule case with all the song name and cool cover art. Well apple thought of a cool way to help you out but most people don't know about it. This is as simple as printing :).
Start by opening up itunes (duhh) and pick a play list. I am going to use jazz and vocal.
Go to File Print ...
you will get a window that pops up.
In this window, I picked a CD jewel case insert. Then I selected the Mosaic theme. On the right hand side, it even gives you a preview. If you like it, click Print.
That is it!!!! It's that simple, but not many iTunes users know about this feature.

CONTROL: Replaytv and Mac home video Server!!!! (Part 2) |
 |
November 07, 2004
This is Part 2: How to Set up the connection
Now that you have all the Hardware from (part 1) you are ready to set up your connection.
hardware I used for this part:
- 1 ReplayTV
- 1 G4 400mhz
- 50 Feet Cat 5
- 2 Cat 5 jacks for the wall mount units
- Wall mount unit
Why not WIFI?
This is a good question. You can do this with something like AirPort Express. AirPort Express would be a lot simpler to set up and would extend your Apple Airport range. I personally didn't do WIFI, as you'll see in the next question.
Why HardWire?
First thing I looked at was the ethernet specs on the ReplayTV and the Mac. The Replay has an Ethernet port 10/100Mbps and my Mac has the same. I wanted to transfer the files as fast as possible due to the file size of one hour of video which is about 3 gig. The second thing I looked at was if I could pull the wire though the walls in my house. In my house, it was simple because I have an attic to pull the wire up through. If you have a house that would be hard to wire or if you find this step hard, you should just get yourself an AirPort Express. 54Mbps is not bad, but it will just take longer to pass the files from the ReplayTV to the Mac.
The Connection
Time to do the hard work. I started with the jack in the living room. I already had cable and phone to this wall, so I thought it would be the best place to add the ethernet jack.
I took off the wall plate and removed the wires from it. I then took the coax cable and attached some strong string to the end of it. Then I went to the attic and pulled the coax up though the wall. Once I got to the end of the coax, I attached the Cat5 (ethernet cable) to the end of the coax. Now I went back down to the living room and pulled on the string to pull the coax and the ethernet cable back down the wall. I now had both the ethernet cable, the coax cable, and the phone cable coming out of the hole in the wall.
On to the Jacks
I went with Leviton Jacks system becouse I find it simple to use and upgrade. Their system is a very plug-and-play approach to wall mount wiring. I stared by snapping into the wall plate the three connecters I would need (Phone, Cat 5 , Coax). From there, it was a matter of connecting the cables to the snap-in jacks. This system gives the tool to help with the Cat 5 and phone jack but not the coax (it should already have a connecter on it).
Time to attach the wall plate back to the wall and connect the coax, the phone, and the ethernet cable that will go to the ReplayTV. (Note I would not plug the ethernet cable to the ReplayTV until after you have finished the other end of the in-wall wiring.)
With the living room finished, I went to the computer room and found another jack that I could do the same setup as I did in the living room. The only difference this time is that I used the other end of the Cat 5 cable from the living room. Now we have our very own Cat 5 connection from the living room to the computer room.
Testing Time:
For the true geeks out there, get out your ethernet testers and go to town. For the rest of you, try using two computers and see if they can talk to one another. If the cables work, you are all set for PART 3 (coming soon). If the cable does not work, I would first look at the jack and check to see if all the wires are set up correctly. After checking that, if you still have a problem, check the Cat 5 cable.
Coming soon: Part 3 software and the Mac!!! (Finally we get on a Mac. This has to be the longest thing I have posed without using the words Mac, OSX, Apple..... ok, now I feel better.)

TIP: iPhoto and the extra computer |
 |
November 03, 2004
If you are like me you and the rest of my family you take a lot of photos and you have a hard time keeping track of them. let this tip help you.
As you should know, you can share your images in iPhoto, but have you ever thought of setting up an iPhoto server?
What You Need:
- Any extra computer that can run OSX (G3 or faster) and can be set up on your network.
- iPhoto 4
Set up this computer:
You will need to install OSX and iPhoto 4.
Once you have installed the software, open up iPhoto and go into the Preferences (iPhoto/Preferences).
Click on "Sharing". Now turn on "Share my photos" and "Share entire library".
Now that the software is set up, add all the hardware to this computer to get your photos into it (i.e. cables to your Digital Camera, Scanner, etc..
Time to set up all the other Macs in your house. On them, open up iPhoto and go into the Preferences (iPhoto/Preferences). Click on "Sharing" and turn on "Look for Shared Photos".
Ready to Use:
With this setup, all you need to do when you have new photos is to add them to the iPhoto server you had just set up. Now every Mac in your house can see them, edit them, and email them around. Just think, every one in your house can have that photo of you in the speedo as their desktop image.

SOFT: Blogging on a mac is now simple |
 |
November 01, 2004
If you blog on a mac this Ecto will change the way you post.
http://ecto.kung-foo.tv/
After looking around the web all weekend for a better way to manage my blogs,
I came across Ecto. I first thought it would be good for posting photos and
little things like that, but from the moment I opened the app, I could tell
it was made to do much more.
Getting Started:
When I first opened up the app, the set up assistant helped me get the app talking
with my blog. This only took about 30 sec, a lot faster than I had thought.
Once it made a connection to my blog's database, it displayed all the posts
I had with all the categories.
Time to do a Test:
It works straight out of the box? No... !!! So I thought I would do
a test. Let's edit one of the entries. I opened one up by clicking on it and
added "...." to the last line of my first entry and clicked "post".
It gave me a little popup window telling me it was uploading.
After I finished, I went to the site and looked to see if it worked and it
did. Now I was impressed. (It does not take much to impress me) .
Photo Test:
It can't make everything about blogging that simple, can it??? Let's
try a photo.... No! Let's try four photos, and I want it to pull them from iPhoto.
( This should kill it. *evil laugh*)
So I started with a new entry. After looking around, I did find an "Import
from iPhoto". This popped up a new window with all my iPhoto images and
the albums.
I clicked on four and clicked "import". This added them to the entry
as thumbnails.
B y clicking on the image, it gave me a little box (located on the bottom right)
for scaling the image, and by double-clicking on the image, a new box popped
up, giving me more options than I imagined.
- Thumbnail size
- Embedded
- Convert image to jpg: (good if you are taking screenshots that are .pdf)
- Image resize: good if your jpg are large
- I was also able to save my setting so I would be able to use them again
later.
- and much more..

All the other stuff it will do:
This app has so much other stuff I could go into, but I do not think you want
to read about it all, and I didn't have that kind of time. So this is the list
from their website.
- support for multiple weblogs and servers (with easy-to-use Account Manager)
- full local control of recently posted entries and drafts (with search function)
- intuitive interface for creating and editing weblog entries
- a Rich Text and an HTML editor with spellcheck and search/replace
- syntax-coloring in the HTML editor
- quick access menu with HTML tag templates and keyboard shortcuts for the
HTML editor (fully customizable)
- support of all available remote control options of MovableType API (posting
entries with continuation, summary, keywords, multiple categories, trackback,
text-formatting, comment options)
- advanced create-a-link dialog
- easily change the posting date of entries
- full-featured HTML-rendered preview of entries using Safari's WebKit
- powerful file and media upload with iPhoto import via attachments
- convert, scale images and create thumbnailsv create poster movies or create
thumbnails from movie frames
- save settings on a per-blog basis
- send notifications by email (with Address Book support)
- insert details of the currently playing iTunes song in your entry
- embedded debug console to troubleshoot server connections
- extensive help documentation accessible from within ecto
- hate the metal and icons? Set the window texture via the Preferences window
and change icons with the supplied switcher!
- works with NetNewsWire, PulpFiction, and Shrook
- localized in Dutch, French, German, and Japanese
- support for del.icio.us, the social bookmarks manager
- Services menu items to blog selected text (with extra features for Safari)
- and much much more!
What I really think:
If you work with blogs and you are looking for a app to ease some headache,
check this app out. It is so simple to use but has all the stuff a pro would
want in it.
The only bad thing I can say is that the html editor is a little buggy and
sometimes will crash, but even with crashes, it will still save your work.
FYI:
If you have not figured it out by now, I used Ecto to enter this post and will
probably use it for future posting.
